You have come to this page because you have a question about a Yankee gutter system.
Before we proceed any further I have a question for you.
Are you positive that it is a Yankee gutter and not a Built in or Integral gutter?
The difference is simple. A Yankee style gutter sits UPON the roof deck and is in a very real sense a roofing component as it replaces a course or two of shingles or slate.
A Built in or Integral gutter sits INTO the roof deck or soffit.
In long years past the Yankee gutter was very common, but in more recent times they have been mostly replaced by something else.
Almost all of the older homes with the free hanging half round gutters originally had Yankee gutters.
Built in or Integral gutters were and still are common on higher end structures often with tile or Slate roofing.
These gutters will likely remain as changing them requires a fair amount of alteration to the building.
They are also very functional and offer some advantages over any type of box gutter.
Either of these types are best done with a solderable metal Copper, Galvanized Iron, Terne or less commonly lead coated copper, stainless steel or Zinc.
The manner of each installation was, for the most part, perfected a hundred plus years ago.
Beware of "new" or "improved "methods.
Chances are your old gutter served well for 80-100 years if installed correctly. There is no better proof to be offered.
I was trained in the old school and have followed that path for 50+ years thus far.
Now that that is out of the way, how may I help you?
